Yang Jia Bu of Weifang is one of the three major woodcarving pictures producing areas in China with the history of 500 years. Yang LuoShu, born and brought up in Yang Jia Bu of Weifang of Shandong, is a folk art master, the 19th successor of the painting shop “Tongshunde” , and director of local research association of peasant's calligraphy and painting. Obsessed with art of the New Year picture since childhood, Yang LuoShu began to touch the burin at 7 years old, learn to print the New Year painting at 14 years old, formally initiated his work in workshop at 17 years old. Persistent effort on the art leads him having good command of the knife carving technique. Not only abundant in the number of the wood carving painting( the number of work designed and produced by him running into 1000),  the artist established a unique school of his own charcteristical of exaggerated sculpt, well-knit layout, rich imagination and primitive simplicity. Currently, Yang achieved more than 10 tops of Chinese New Year picture: He created the wood carving skill characterized by" endowing the knife and finger joint with spiritualism” .In 1982,he originated wood carving painting calendar.

Later on, Yang carved a artwork named <emperors of past dynasties>, which is the only set of wood carving New Year picture in China. His works wan Grand Prix of the national folk artwork many times, selling to more than 100 countries and regions throughout all of the world and being treasured up by the people who are fond of them home and abroad. His knife, produces one delicate artwork after another, making him become the artist creating largest number of artworks and entitling him with “The Most Capable Master of Chinese New Year Picture’”. In March of 2002, UNESCO awarded Yang " folk art master ".

Yang LuoShu has received countless foreign guests, such as Kampuchea Sihanouk infante and his wife. During the 9th Weifang international kites exhibition in April of 1992, national leaders Li ruihuai made an inspection to the village accompanied by the province clerk Jiang chunyun. They especially enjoyed Yang’s performance of wood carving. In December of 1996, his artwork presented itself on a famous program emceed by Niping (a popular female television host in China); And  Media introduced his feat to the mass throughout the country and praised him as “The Most Capable Master of Chinese New Year Picture’”

Five wood boards are needed for a New Year Picture. “108 Water Margin figures ”created by Yang luoshu used 540 boards. And “Journey to the West” used 440 boards, creating 4000 figures and over 5000 characters. Only wood of birchleaf pear tree he used can fill several trucks!
